Restaurant Review: Umi Sushi & Oyster Bar at Pechanga Casino

Umi Sushi & Oyster Bar is located inside the Pechanga Casino. This is the first restaurant I have tried inside the casino besides the buffet. My sister and I decided to take our mom out for a Temecula wine tasting tour during the day and dinner in the evening. With many dining choices in the Temecula area we settled on Umi, partly because it is in the casino and mom likes to play slot machines, but also because the menu looked promising. It was early Monday evening and as you can see the place was empty, however it began to pick up later in the evening. we decided on ordering some appetizers to share.

The Fried Shishito Peppers with eel sauce, spicy mayo and togarashi were delicious. I love shishito peppers and these lightly tempura battered ones were sooo good. We also had the Pork Belly Sliders. Braised Kurobota pork belly with green onion, cilantro, jalapeno and crushed cashews on a steamed bun. These were my favorite of the appetizers. The bun was warm and soft and the pork belly was flavorful. The addition of the greens brought a nice herbal contrast. I would order these again.

The Robata Street Corn was grilled sweet corn garnished with  kewpie mayo, togarashi, sautéed shrimp, edamame, grana padano, shredded nori, bonito and okonomiyaki sauce. I am not a big fan of corn but my sister is and wanted to try this. I thought it was just okay. The Shrimp and Chips was the least favorite of the appetizers we tried. The grilled shrimp was a bit over cooked and on the chewy side. The waffle fries with garlic aioli were pretty unimpressive. We also tried a sushi roll but it was also unforgettable. I would love to go back to try some of the entrees, they are a little pricey so perhaps for another special occasion.
